Tawang is already a magical destination, but if you’re someone who loves going beyond the usual tourist trail, then it’s time to explore Mago, Zemithang and Holy Water Falls— some of the most remote, spiritual, and breathtaking parts of Arunachal Pradesh.
Located near the Indo-Bhutan border, these hidden gems offer serene landscapes, rich Monpa culture, ancient monasteries, and a divine water source that locals believe is truly sacred.
Join Wild Hill Adventure as we take you to this untouched region, where nature meets spirituality.
Beyond the well-trodden paths, this region beckons with a raw, untamed allure. Imagine verdant valleys, gushing rivers, remote villages, and waterfalls that cascade like liquid silver. It’s a place where time slows down, and the rhythm of nature takes over.
Our journey begins with Mago Tawang, a high-altitude village that serves as a gateway to this remote paradise. Reaching Mago itself is an adventure, involving navigating winding mountain roads that offer panoramic views at every turn. The air here is crisp, and the silence is profound, broken only by the whispers of the wind and the distant calls of birds.
Mago is not just a destination; it’s an experience. Surrounded by towering peaks and alpine meadows, it’s a haven for trekkers and nature lovers. The local Monpa community welcomes visitors with warm hospitality, offering a glimpse into their unique way of life. You might find yourself sipping butter tea by a crackling fire, sharing stories with the villagers, and witnessing their vibrant traditions firsthand. For those interested in extended treks, Mago can be a base for exploring higher reaches and hidden passes.
The path leads to Zemithang Tawang, a significant village with both natural beauty and historical importance. Located on the banks of the mighty Nyamjang Chu River, Zemithang is famous for its picturesque setting and its connection to the 14th Dalai Lama’s escape route from Tibet in 1959.
The highlight of this wild hill adventure is the Holy Water Falls Tawang, locally known as Chumi Gyatse (or Chumiy Gatsu in some dialects). just 250 meters from the India-China border, this collection of 108 waterfalls is a natural and spiritual marvel. Dropping from an elevation of approximately 11,500 feet, the falls are revered by the Monpa tribe and Tibetan Buddhists for their believed healing properties. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava, the “Second Buddha,” created the falls by flinging his rosary of 108 beads against a rock, resulting in the formation of these sacred streams. Another tale credits Guru Lawapa, an avatar of Manjushree, for producing water from 108 rock holes to aid a meditating guru during a time of scarcity.
For those seeking a full-day adventure, combine your visit to Chumi Gyatse with a stop at the Damting Village Hot Spring, just a 20-minute drive away. A short 2-minute walk across a suspended bridge leads to this mineral-rich hot spring, where you can soak in 70-degree Celsius waters known for their therapeutic benefits.
From the endpoint of the Holy Waterfall, you can see roads leading into Tibet. There are also large photos of Chinese leaders displayed in the area, which are clearly visible from the viewpoint
To explore Mago Zemithang and Holy Water Falls Tawang, preparation is key due to the region’s remote location and challenging terrain. Here are some travel tips:
Best Time to Visit: May to October offers predictable weather, with September to November being ideal for clear views. December to February transforms the area into a snowy wonderland, but be prepared for cold temperatures.
What to Pack: Carry a warm jacket, sturdy trekking shoes, a water bottle, snacks, a small first-aid kit, and identification due to the proximity to the LAC. A backpack or daypack is essential for the trek.
Explore Mago Zemithang and Holy Water Falls Tawang offers more than just a trip; it’s an expedition into the soul of Arunachal Pradesh. It’s an opportunity to challenge yourself, connect with nature on a profound level, and experience the warmth of a unique culture.
