The path leads to Zemithang Tawang, a significant village with both natural beauty and historical importance. Located on the banks of the mighty Nyamjang Chu River, Zemithang is famous for its picturesque setting and its connection to the 14th Dalai Lama’s escape route from Tibet in 1959.

The Sacred Embrace of Holy Water Falls Tawang (Chumi Gyatsel)

Holy Water Falls Tawang (Chumi Gyatsel)
Holy Water Falls Tawang (Chumi Gyatsel)

The highlight of this wild hill adventure is the Holy Water Falls Tawang, locally known as Chumi Gyatse (or Chumiy Gatsu in some dialects). just 250 meters from the India-China border, this collection of 108 waterfalls is a natural and spiritual marvel. Dropping from an elevation of approximately 11,500 feet, the falls are revered by the Monpa tribe and Tibetan Buddhists for their believed healing properties. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava, the “Second Buddha,” created the falls by flinging his rosary of 108 beads against a rock, resulting in the formation of these sacred streams. Another tale credits Guru Lawapa, an avatar of Manjushree, for producing water from 108 rock holes to aid a meditating guru during a time of scarcity.

For those seeking a full-day adventure, combine your visit to Chumi Gyatse with a stop at the Damting Village Hot Spring, just a 20-minute drive away. A short 2-minute walk across a suspended bridge leads to this mineral-rich hot spring, where you can soak in 70-degree Celsius waters known for their therapeutic benefits.
